The Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl is one of eight bowl games sanctioned by the National Junior College Athletic Association. The bowl committee’s objectives are to showcase the talents of amateur athletes from Snow College and another junior college, to give athletes an opportunity to play in a first class venue and to raise money for higher education scholarships and medical care for children.
Zions Bank is the title sponsor for the sixth consecutive year. Rio Tinto Stadium, located in Sandy, Utah, is the bowl site. Snow College will be the home team each year as long the football team finishes 6-4 or better. The Snow College football team is a perennial power in the NJCAA. They have finished in the top 20 for the past eight seasons, including National Championship game appearances in 2007 and 2008.
2008 – Fifth Annual Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl
SANDY-- No. 2 ranked Butler Community College defeated No. 1 ranked Snow College in the Top of the Mountains Bowl 37-30 in double overtime to claim the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The Badgers slipped behind in the first quarter after losing the ball to an interception and a fumble that resulted in Butler touchdowns. Momentum stemming from the players and an energetic crowd allowed Butler a 14-point surge with back-to-back touchdowns.
The first touchdown was completed by a two-yard run by Randell Bell. The Badgers answered three minutes later with a similar two-yard rush by Tyson Church to tie.
The Badger edge slipped from there. An interception and a fumble in the second quarter resulted in two Butler touchdowns, which Snow College answered only with a safety from a blocked field goal in the third quarter.
Four minutes into the fourth quarter, a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jon Eastman to Sam Thomas narrowed Butler's lead, 23-16. With four minutes remaining, Mike Meifu scored a two yard run that wasn't answered until play was in overtime.
Snow overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game 23-23, and forced an overtime.
Following NJCAA guidelines, each team is allowed an opportunity to score a touchdown from the 25 yard line. The game ends when one team fails to answer.
Snow scored first with another Eastman-to-Thomas pass, this time for 24 yards, which Butler responded to with a 14-yard pass from quarterback Press Taylor to Faron Horns.
After trading touchdowns, the Badgers were unable to answer a Grizzly touchdown in the second overtime, allowing Butler to come away with its second consecutive national championship.
The Badger's chance to answer a double-overtime touchdown by Butler ended when a pass to Regan Buck was snatched away by Forlando Johnson, and the game was over.
"It was a heartbreaking loss," said Head Coach Steve Coburn. "Our kids played their hearts out."
The teams are not unfamiliar with each other in bowl play. The teams have split two earlier meetings in bowl matches.
